A PLATFORM FOR SUCCESS - ONE YEAR ON AND THRIVING AS A FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER

“When I first saw the AVMI Veterans Programme I honestly thought it was too good to be true, especially as I didn’t have the typical ‘skillset’ required for the audio visual industry.

My first few months can only be described as a whirlwind, time flew and I learnt so much. I can remember seeing the CTS handbook for the first time and thinking ‘wow that’s a lot to learn’, however I knew I could rely on all the ex-vets to help me out if need be, and I did!

The support I received from the wider team was incredible and I found myself quickly flourishing into the engineer the programme promised I would be. I was mentored by Dane van Der Linden and Len Martin but was also helped by several other engineers, the technical service team, as well as my colleagues on the service desk, who all played a key role in my success.

I was determined to pass the CTS exam within six months so I spent my time absorbing as much knowledge as possible alongside studying for the exam. It was only when I passed that I realised all my hard work had come to fruition, it was such an amazing feeling to become Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) qualified!

Whilst I have acquired a plethora of new skills, the skills that I brought with me from the army like courage, discipline, respect of others, integrity, loyalty, selfless commitment (CDRILS) were put to use from the first day I started at AVMI.

Now that I have finished the programme, I truly believe I have become a well-rounded service engineer who plays a key role in the bigger AVMI picture. I continue to develop my skillset and I have qualified in various other manufacturer courses in the hope that I can become a more senior service engineer. The AVMI Veteran’s Programme has opened the doors to several other roles like a commissioning engineer, a project manager, or a subject matter expert (SME), should I wish to work my way up the ranks.

For anyone looking to join the scheme, I highly recommend that you consider looking into it further to see how it could help you. There are so many skilled people within the business that you will never struggle no matter what problem you are trying to solve.
